He Born on January 12, 1895 in Bhimavaram, West Godavari district. His father Jagannath, was a manual labourer. His mother Venkamma, housewife. Subbarao's father retired when he was in high school. Being from a poor family, their father refused to let Subbarao do matriculation. On his mother's insistence, Subbarao was sent to Rajahmundry to take the matriculation exam. But he did not pass. Meanwhile, when his father died, his mother only raised everyone. Subbarao completed his matriculation at Chennai Hindu High School for his mother's promise. With the help of relatives, he joined Chennai Medical College and graduated. Then he did diploma in physiology in London Tropical School of Medison.

In those days diseases like smallpox, diarrheal disease, plague and malaria used to persecute the people. Subbarao's elder brother Purushottam and another brother Krishnamurthy are seven days apart died of tropical sprue. That shook Subbarao's mind. However, they wanted to find a cure for these diseases. It was difficult for Subbarao to survive in America. He worked as an agricultural labourer and compounder all day long. Research all night. He used to work 22 hours a day. His talent was recognized by Dr. Richard Strong was offered a job as librarian at the Harvard Medical School of Tropical Medicine in Boston. With that, Subbarao suffered a bit financially. After that he joined at Dr.Otopalin as a disciple and did research for two years. He discovered that when a person is tired, phosphate material is produced in the body. With this, he got the honor of discovering phosphate liquids for the first time in the world. For his research, Harvard University given P.H.D.

For the remedies of diseases caused by deficiency of food, anemia. Research has also been done. American company 'Lederle Laboratory' wanted to work in their research lab. He used to work there three days a week. The rest of the days were taught at Harvard University. Then in chemistry, biology he was appointed Assistant Director in that institution for his researches in Chemistry and biology. He is the first Indian in the history of the laboratory to hold this position. After becoming a director, he prepared combination of vitamin B12 and folic acid was discovered for the eradication of anemia. He did many researches with a researcher named Piske in New York. The role of phosphocreative in muscle contraction and the estimation of phosphorus in the laboratory have all been discovered. Invented in 1926, this research was called 'Piske-Subbarao Method'. Teropterin were discovered in research to prevent cancer. In 1945, an antibiotic called Aureomycin was discovered. It is very useful for all people. He passed away on August 9, 1948 in America due to a heart attack.
